Cursor vs Claude Code in 2026: which one should your team pay for?

The short answer: Both start at $20 a month. Pick Cursor if your team wants to see and edit code in an editor, with AI help on every line and agents running in the background. Pick Claude Code if your developers live in the terminal, or if you already pay for Claude Pro or Max, since Claude Code is included. Many small teams end up with one of each, but do not start there.

What each one is

Cursor is a code editor built around AI. You see your files, it suggests edits as you type, and its Agent can make multi-file changes you review. In the last month it has moved well beyond an editor:

• Projects (beta, rolling out from 10 September 2026): a coordinator agent that plans a larger piece of work, like a feature or a migration, and hands parts to subagents on Cursor's cloud.
• Origin code hosting (early beta on paid plans): Cursor can host your repos and pull requests, with GitHub sync.
• Self-hosted machines: agents can run tools inside your own network.
• Cursor Pro now lists xAI's Grok Bot as included.

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It runs in your terminal (and in IDE extensions), reads your repo, runs commands and edits files. There is no separate Claude Code subscription: it is part of Claude Pro and Max, or you pay per token through the API.

Cursor (monthly, per person):

• Hobby: free, with limited Agent requests and Tab completions
• Pro: $20 ($16 a month billed annually)
• Pro+: $60 ($48 annually), about 3x Pro's Agent limits
• Ultra: $200 ($160 annually), about 20x Pro's Agent limits
• Teams: $40 per user ($32 annually), with a Premium seat at $120 per user
• Enterprise: custom

Claude Code (via Claude plans):

• Pro: $20 a month, or $17 a month effective when paid annually ($200 upfront)
• Max: from $100 a month, for 5x or 20x Pro's usage
• API pay-as-you-go: per token. Sonnet 5 is $2 input and $10 output per million tokens, and Opus 5.5 (released 22 September 2026) is $4 and $20. Opus 5, now a legacy model, is still $5 and $25.

Both tools meter heavy use. On Cursor, going over your included usage is billed in arrears. On Claude Pro, you hit a usage limit and wait, or move up to Max.

Who should pick Cursor

• Teams where not everyone writes code all day. Designers, founders and junior developers get more out of seeing changes in an editor than in a terminal.
• Teams that want background agents working while laptops are closed. Projects and Cloud Agents are built for that.
• Companies that need a free tier to trial with. Claude Code has none.

Who should pick Claude Code

• Developers who already work in the terminal and want an agent that runs their tests, git and scripts directly.
• Anyone already paying for Claude Pro or Max for writing and research. Claude Code comes with it, so the extra cost is zero.
• Teams that want to script or automate the agent, since it runs from the command line.

The cost of getting it wrong

For one person the difference is small: both are $20. It matters at team scale. Five people on Cursor Teams is $200 a month ($160 annually). Five people on Claude Pro is $100 a month, or roughly $85 billed annually, and they also get Claude for non-coding work. A team that mostly writes documents and only sometimes codes should lean toward Claude. A product team shipping code daily should lean toward Cursor.
