ChatGPT just added an $8 Go plan — is it enough for your business?

OpenAI slotted a new $8/month ChatGPT Go plan between Free and the $20 Plus tier. Here's who it's genuinely right for, who should stay on Free, and who still needs Plus — without overpaying either way.

OpenAI has added a new ChatGPT Go plan at $8/month, sitting between the Free tier and the familiar $20 Plus plan. It's a small addition with a big implication for small businesses: for the first time, the gap between "free and limited" and "paying $20" has a middle rung. (Our ChatGPT tool page reflects the new Go, Plus, Pro and Business tiers as of this week's price check.)

The obvious question — "is $8 enough?" — is the wrong one to lead with. The right one is: what do you actually run out of on the Free plan? Answer that and the tier picks itself.

What each tier is really selling

Like almost every AI subscription, these tiers mostly sell more usage, not better answers. The model quality is similar across Free, Go and Plus for everyday work — what changes is how much you can do before you hit a wall, and which extras you unlock.

  • Free — the current default model, limited messages, limited image generation and file uploads. Fine for occasional use.
  • Go ($8) — more messages than Free, longer memory, extended image generation and file uploads, plus projects and custom GPTs. The "I use this most days" plan.
  • Plus ($20) — everything in Go, plus access to reasoning and legacy models, deep research, agent mode, advanced data analysis, and higher caps.

So the ladder reads: Free = occasional, Go = daily-but-simple, Plus = daily-and-advanced.

Who Go is genuinely right for

Go is the sweet spot if your AI use is frequent but straightforward:

  • Drafting emails, replies, and social captions every day.
  • Rewriting and summarizing text.
  • Answering questions and light research.
  • The occasional image or file upload.

If that's your day and you keep bumping into Free's message limits, $8 removes the friction for a quarter of the price of Plus. For a lot of solo owners and small teams, Go is all they'll ever need.

Who should stay on Free

Don't upgrade out of habit. Stay on Free if you open ChatGPT a few times a week, rarely hit a limit, and don't need long memory or custom GPTs. Paying $8 to remove a wall you never touch is the same mistake as paying $20 — just smaller. We walk through spotting this in Audit your AI subscriptions.

Who still needs Plus

Step up to $20 only if you actually use the advanced features:

  • Deep research and agent mode for multi-step tasks.
  • Advanced data analysis on spreadsheets and files.
  • Reasoning models for harder problems.
  • You hit Go's limits most days doing real work.

If you're not sure you use those, you probably don't — and Go will feel identical to Plus for your day, at 40% of the cost.

The two-week test

You can't reason your way to the right tier; you measure it. Start one rung below where you think you belong, use it normally for two weeks, and watch for the wall:

  1. On Free and hitting limits? → try Go.
  2. On Go and blocked most days, or reaching for research/analysis? → step up to Plus.
  3. Never saw a wall? → you're already on the right plan. Stop there.

There's no reward for buying ahead of need. These plans are monthly — you can move up the instant you hit a real limit.

Don't solve this one tool at a time

ChatGPT is one line on a bill that usually has five or six. The same "which tier?" question applies to your writing, design, meeting and automation tools too — and picking each one blindly is how a stack quietly balloons. Our Business AI Plan ($99 one-time, kept current by an optional $29/month subscription) tells you which tools and which tier of each fit your industry and budget, so you're not guessing per app.

Want it sized for you? Take the free 2-minute AI plan finder and we'll recommend the tools — and the tiers — that match what your business actually does. Or hand the whole setup to our done-for-you service.
