Hiring one: six figures, if you can get one

Glassdoor's aggregated salary data puts typical FDE base salaries well into six figures, before equity and bonus. At the frontier AI labs, reported total-compensation packages run substantially higher. Two more costs hide behind the salary: recruiting (these people are scarce and heavily courted), and the reality that the strongest candidates are choosing between an AI lab and you.

Renting one: agency engagements from ~$8,000

A crop of specialist agencies now sells the FDE model as fixed-fee engagements — an embedded engineer or small team for a defined sprint. Published packages in this market start around $8,000–$15,000 for a short readiness sprint and climb well into six figures for regulated-industry deployments and monthly embedded retainers.

Who this is for: companies with a concrete build project and a five-figure budget — typically Series A+ startups and mid-market firms in finance, health, and legal.

The productized version: $99
