AI consultant cost in 2026: published rates, project prices and cheaper options

What an AI consultant costs in 2026, from published sources: Clutch puts AI development companies at $25 to $49 an hour and the typical project at $10,000 to $49,999. What you get for that, and when a small business needs less.

By Dapols ·

The short answer: there is no standard price list for AI consultants, but the published figures put an AI development company at $25 to $49 an hour offshore and $50 to $99 an hour in the US, and the typical AI project reviewed on Clutch at $10,000 to $49,999 (Clutch AI pricing guide, updated 21 September 2026, read 8 October 2026). Most small businesses need far less than a full project: the expensive part is usually deciding which tools to use and in what order, not building custom AI.

Disclosure: Dapols sells a software version of the planning part of an AI consultant's job. We say where a human consultant is the better buy, and every number below links its source.

The Glassdoor row is derived: 25th to 75th percentile annual pay of $157,843 to $290,004, divided by 2,080 working hours (read 23 September 2026). It is what consultants are paid, not what clients are billed; a consultancy charges more than it pays its staff.

Two cautions about these numbers. Clutch's page is internally inconsistent: it also lists an average project cost of $120,594.55, well above its "typical" range, because a few large projects pull the average up. And none of these sources measures "AI consultant" exactly. They measure AI developers and engineers, which is the closest published proxy.

What the money buys

An AI consultant's work usually falls into three layers, and they cost very different amounts:

  1. Strategy: where AI is worth using in the business, what each use is worth against the effort, and in what order to roll it out. This is what an "AI strategy consultant" sells. It is a few days of work.
  2. Setup and integration: choosing tools, connecting them to your email, CRM and documents, writing the prompts, and putting a human approval step in the right place. Weeks, not days.
  3. Custom build: software built for your business, trained on your data, and maintained. This is where the $10,000 to $49,999 projects live.

A small business with 2 to 20 people rarely needs layer 3. It usually needs layer 1 done properly, and layer 2 done for one or two workflows.

Rough budgets, worked from the published rates

These are arithmetic, not quotes. They multiply the hours a job typically takes by the published hourly ranges above.

JobHours, our assumptionAt $25 to $49 an hourAt $50 to $99 an hour
Strategy: an AI opportunity review and roadmap10 to 20$250 to $980$500 to $1,980
Setup of one workflow, such as lead follow-up15 to 40$375 to $1,960$750 to $3,960
Both, for three workflows50 to 120$1,250 to $5,880$2,500 to $11,880

Your real quote depends on the consultant, your systems and how much has to be connected. Use the table to sanity-check a proposal, not to predict one. Our AI consultant page has a calculator that does the same multiplication with your own hours.

How to keep the cost down

  • Buy the strategy before the build. A clear list of where AI pays off, with tool prices, stops you paying a developer to explore.
  • Start with one workflow. One working automation teaches you more than a 40-page strategy deck.
  • Use off-the-shelf tools first. Most small-business jobs, like drafting replies, sorting email or chasing invoices, are covered by tools at $20 to $100 a month. See AI tools for small business.
  • Ask for a fixed price. Hourly billing on a vague scope is where budgets go wrong.

When a human AI consultant is worth it

Pay for a person when the work needs someone in the room: workshops with your team, change management, integrations across several systems or custom code, regulated work where someone has to take professional responsibility, or negotiating enterprise contracts. Software does not do those things well, and we do not claim Dapols does.

Where Dapols fits

Dapols does the strategy layer as software: answer seven questions and it maps where AI saves you time, costs the tools at your budget and lays out a 90-day roadmap with setup steps. It costs $99 once, with an optional $29 a month to keep it current, and a 7-day refund. A person checks the AI drafts. It does not log into your systems or act on your behalf. Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI consultant cost per hour? Clutch lists AI development companies at $25 to $49 an hour typically, and $50 to $99 an hour in the US, Canada and parts of Europe. Upwork lists AI engineers at $35 to $60 an hour.

How much does an AI project cost? Clutch's typical AI development project is $10,000 to $49,999, though its average is higher, at about $120,595, because of a few large projects.

Does a small business need an AI consultant? Usually not a full engagement. Most need a clear plan for where AI pays off and setup help for one or two workflows, which costs far less than a custom project.

What does an AI strategy consultant do? They decide where AI should be used first, what each use is worth against the effort, and the order and budget for rolling it out. It is the cheapest layer of AI consulting and the one that saves the most money later.
