What does a forward-deployed engineer cost? (And the $99 version of the job)

FDE salaries, agency day-rates, and productized alternatives compared — what you actually pay for the 'make AI work here' function at every business size, with sources.

Forward-deployed engineers — the people who embed inside a company to make AI actually work there — have become one of tech's most-hired roles (what the job is, in plain English). Here's what that function costs, at every scale, so you can see where you fit.

Hiring one: six figures, if you can get one

Glassdoor's aggregated salary data puts typical FDE base salaries well into six figures, before equity and bonus. At the frontier AI labs, reported total-compensation packages run substantially higher. Two more costs hide behind the salary: recruiting (these people are scarce and heavily courted), and the reality that the strongest candidates are choosing between an AI lab and you.

Who this is for: enterprises and funded startups with ongoing, custom AI engineering needs.

Renting one: agency engagements from ~$8,000

A crop of specialist agencies now sells the FDE model as fixed-fee engagements — an embedded engineer or small team for a defined sprint. Published packages in this market start around $8,000–$15,000 for a short readiness sprint and climb well into six figures for regulated-industry deployments and monthly embedded retainers.

Who this is for: companies with a concrete build project and a five-figure budget — typically Series A+ startups and mid-market firms in finance, health, and legal.

The productized version: $99

For a small business, the honest question isn't "how do I afford the above" — it's "which parts of that job do I actually need?" Strip the FDE role to its motions and three of the four productize cleanly (we walk through the mapping here):

The FDE motionThe productized versionPrice
Discovery (understand the business)A structured 2-minute questionnaireFree
Recommendation (pick the stack)The plan we assign your business from your answers: exact tools, prompts, agents, MCP serversIncluded
Custom recommendationThat plan customized to your business and reviewed by a person, plus chat about it$99 one-time
Keeping it trueTool and price changes tracked and applied as the market moves$29/month, optional

You are not shopping a catalog. You answer questions, we assign the plan that matches your business, and the $99 builds it out for you specifically. It is a single charge — nothing renews and no card is kept. About a month later we ask whether you want the $29/month to keep the plan current; it starts only if you say yes, and stopping it never takes the plan away.

The fourth motion — ongoing custom engineering inside your systems — doesn't productize, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. At small-business scale you rarely need it; when you do, tell us what you're trying to do and we'll scope it honestly or tell you we're the wrong fit.

The comparison that actually matters

Don't compare $99 to $160,000 — that's a rhetorical trick, and the products aren't identical. Compare against your real alternatives:

  • DIY research: free, costs 10–20 hours, and produces a stack based on whatever was trending the week you searched — with no one re-checking it in three months.
  • A generalist consultant: commonly $150–$300/hour; a small engagement runs low four figures and the advice starts aging the day the invoice clears.
  • An assigned, customized plan: $99 once, built for your business and reviewed by a person, with the option to keep it re-verified for $29/month — it exists because the vendor's whole business is keeping the answer current.

The FDE hiring wave is the market saying loudly that the "make AI work here" function is worth paying for. The only question is paying for it at the right size.
