Why the decision stays human
A hire changes your team and your costs. The fit depends on things that are hard to write down. AI tools that screen candidates can also carry bias, and in some places there are rules about using them. A person who can explain the choice is safer.
Where AI helps
AI can draft a clear job post, suggest a consistent list of interview questions and help you write polite, honest messages to people you did not pick. It can also help you prepare a first-week plan.
A fair process
Decide what the job needs before you look at anyone. Ask each candidate the same core questions. Take notes yourself. Check references. Give candidates a clear answer, and keep the final call with you.
A short checklist for a fair hire
Write down the three things the job really needs. Use the same opening questions for everyone. Take notes during each interview, not afterwards. Ask for a short, paid sample of the work where that makes sense. Call at least one reference. Tell candidates when you will decide and keep that promise. Check the employment rules for your place before you make an offer, including what you may ask. After a hire, review how it is going at the end of the first month.
