Should AI do your bookkeeping?

Our answer is no. Use a plain accounting tool to keep the books, and use AI only to help you understand what they say. Your books have to be exact, and your accountant will ask for them.

Why a plain tool wins

An accounting app records every sale and expense in the same way each time. It matches your bank feed, keeps an audit trail and produces reports your accountant already knows how to read. AI writes text that sounds right. In a ledger, sounding right is not enough.

Where AI can help

Once the books are in order, an AI chat is good at explaining a profit-and-loss report in plain words, listing the questions to ask your accountant, or turning a messy pile of receipts into a tidy list before you enter them. In each case you check the result against the app. The app stays the record.

What to watch for

Never paste bank logins or full account numbers into a chat. Keep one place for the truth, the accounting tool, and do not copy figures from an AI reply into it without checking them. If your business has staff, stock or sales tax, ask an accountant to look over the setup once.

Some tool links are affiliate links. A verdict never depends on one.

Common questions

Can AI do my bookkeeping for me?

It can help you understand reports and prepare questions. It should not be your record. Use an accounting app for that, and have a person check it at tax time.

Is a free accounting app good enough?

Many small businesses start on a free plan. Check the vendor's current pricing page for what is included, because plans change.

Should I still hire a bookkeeper?

If you dislike the work or have complex needs such as stock or payroll, a bookkeeper is worth asking about. A good one will tell you which tool to use.
